23 tips for saving electricity in the home

Environmentalists have been encouraging people to save electricity for a long time, and not just since the energy crisis. This not only protects the earth, but also saves money. But finding the beginning is often not easy. Which devices have a high energy consumption, where there is energy-saving potential and which energy-saving measures also have a visible impact on your electricity bill - difficult to understand for a layman and hardly implementable in stressful everyday life. With our tricks and tips for saving electricity, we want to give you tools to help you significantly reduce your electricity costs. You can find out exactly how in the following article.

Saving energy in everyday life: Our energy-saving tips

Many tips for saving electricity are obvious: pull the plug rather than leave it in the socket, turn off the light when nobody is in the room and, of course, use electrical appliances with high energy efficiency. But all in all, it is the measures that are less obvious that demonstrably reduce power consumption. It will probably take some time before you, as an electricity consumer, have adopted the following tips into your everyday life. But once implemented, your electricity bill at the latest will convince you to establish an energy saving tip routine.

Cool with less energy

In order to keep the energy consumption of cooling devices as low as possible, there are a few things you should consider:

  • Don't put hot dishes in the fridge.
  • Set the temperature of your freezer to -18 degrees and open the door as infrequently and briefly as possible.
  • Watch out for ice: Defrost your device regularly, whether it’s a refrigerator or a freezer, and you should pay attention to NoFrost when buying new ones.
  • The temperature in the fridge should be around 5 degrees on the bottom shelf and 7 degrees on the top shelf. Just one degree more means six percent less electricity consumption.
  • Save yourself extra cooling devices and buy a fridge with an integrated freezer compartment.

kitchen and cooking

Hardly any other room has so many electronic devices that are permanently connected to the power grid – and sometimes even have to be. The easiest solution is not always to flip the power switch, because an interrupted cold chain is not sustainable, just like you can simply disconnect a stove from the high-voltage network. Of course, such electrical appliances in your household still influence the energy consumption and the electricity meter turns tirelessly in circles. Fortunately, there are our tips to save on energy costs.

  • Cook instead of cooking. Vegetables, pasta, rice - all these foods have in common that they do not need boiling water to cook.
  • Every pot has a matching lid. And every pan too. With a lid you lose less heat and thus save electricity, because it takes less energy to heat the contents of the pot.
  • Only fill your kettle with the amount of water you need.
  • The circulating air swirls around the heat in the oven and not only uses less electricity, the cooking process is also shortened.
  • Don't preheat and use the residual heat from your oven
  • Always load your dishwasher fully and choose low temperatures, preferably with the Eco program.
  • If you don't use devices all the time, you should disconnect them from the power supply, which saves up to 100 euros a year.

Use less energy in the bathroom

A secret power guzzler is the instantaneous water heater. If your water is heated with electricity and you use an instantaneous water heater, you should make sure that the temperature is set exactly as you need it for the shower. Otherwise, the device heats up much more than necessary - and that permanently. And you can also save money when washing:

  • Always load your washing machine fully, but no more than the manufacturer's specifications allow.
  • Low temperatures are usually enough to wash your laundry clean
  • If you can't hang your laundry outside, you should choose a high spin cycle to use less energy in the dryer.
  • Use eco-programs and avoid short programs.

Digital Natives – Saving electricity in the home despite multimedia devices

We are digital natives, the smartphone has become an indispensable part of everyday life, the laptop or tablet is always and everywhere with us. At home, the latest games console is waiting in front of the TV that is far too big, and our generation is enthusiastic about technology. We don't have to go into detail about the effects on your current mirror at this point. But we can give you tips and tricks on how you can reduce your power consumption despite technical gimmicks:

  • Pay attention to the energy efficiency class of your devices. The better this is, the less consumption your device has. Use power strips with a power switch so you can easily switch the devices on and off as needed.
  • Laptop instead of desktop computer! These consume a lot more power than the handy devices you can take with you, but the tablet performs even better, which, depending on what you use your laptop for, might even be a cheaper alternative.
  • Almost all devices have a power saving or hibernation mode, including smartphones. Use them not only to save electricity, but also to take regular breaks.
  • Don't leave chargers plugged in. They continue to consume electricity, even without a device.
  • When everyone is sleeping, WiFi is not necessary. Simply turn off your router using a schedule or timer.
  • LEDs require up to 90 percent less electricity

Reduce your electricity costs and save money

Once you have eliminated all power guzzlers and developed a routine for also disconnecting the devices that consume power in standby mode from the mains, you can reduce your electricity costs by up to 100 euros a year. Turning off the lights more often, drying your laundry in the sun and unplugging the TV at night makes a much bigger difference than you might have imagined. And when the first repayments instead of additional payments are on your electricity bill and you can celebrate success, the tiresome saving of energy quickly becomes a routine that you have grown fond of. We hope we were able to help you with our tips for saving electricity in the household, to noticeably reduce your electricity costs despite rising electricity prices.
