Cosy Roots ist GOTS zertifiziert - doch was bedeutet das im Detail?

Cosy Roots is GOTS certified - but what does that mean in detail?

You've probably read it before: Cosy Roots is GOTS certified! We are proud of this seal because with the certification we are sending a clear signal to everyone who is interested in our products. We meet all the criteria needed to be certified for the Global Organic Textile Standard seal. But now, hand on heart, do you actually know what these criteria are? And what does it actually mean when a company is GOTS certified? In the following article you will find out what GOTS actually is and why we are so proud that our shop meets all the criteria needed to obtain the GOTS seal.

Global Organic Textile Standard: We are GOTS certified

It all started with textiles at Cosy Roots. We wanted to make shoes for babies that would stay on their feet, were beautiful and timeless and, above all, free from sheep's wool that would put a strain on delicate baby skin. Our focus is on sustainability. So the only logical step for us was to have our company officially certified by GOTS, the Global Organic Textile Standard. The requirements that this seal entails also represent our own. When buying our products, our customers should be sure that they and their children are not only getting the highest standard of quality, but that humanity is also our priority. Are you wondering what the GOTS criteria actually are? We'll tell you now.

The standard

Before we take a closer look at the GOTS criteria, you should first understand what GOTS actually is. Unlike seals such as Oeko-Tex, the GOTS standard also includes the production and supply chain. This means you can be sure that companies with GOTS certification not only use organic quality materials, but also focus on sustainability throughout the entire production process of the product. The seal is characterized by four distinctive key criteria that must be met in order to receive GOTS certification.

  • The certified textiles are made of organic fibers. This means that they are natural fibers that are grown according to the principles of organic farming, meaning that their production does not require the use of synthetic pesticides, insecticides, herbicides or genetic engineering. Organic farming therefore makes an important contribution: it maintains the health of ecosystems, soils and people.
  • Ecological and social standards must be observed in textile production. This means that an assessment according to GOTS carefully examines every single step of production - from the chemicals used to the ethical treatment of the workers.
  • All processing stages are included. In addition to processing, manufacturing, packaging and labeling, the GOTS certification system also takes into account the trade and distribution of all textiles that consist of at least 70 percent certified organic fibers.
  • Certification is carried out by independent certification companies.

The guidelines

Anyone who wants to be certified according to GOTS must comply with the guidelines and disclose their production chain. But this does not start with the purchase of the materials; the cultivation of the organic cotton is also strictly checked. The focus is on the organically produced natural fibers, but also that the farmers are paid fairly and that certain social criteria are adhered to. Anyone who cannot prove compliance with the ethical guidelines will not receive a seal. Every small step that the organic cotton goes through on its way before it ultimately becomes organic textiles is subject to the strict GOTS guidelines. Whether dyeing, spinning, weaving or sewing - every link in the long chain of the textile industry is strictly checked and compliance is ensured by annual inspections.

The GOTS seal - an investment that pays off

The GOTS seal stands for quality, sustainability and ethnic responsibility. But small start-ups in particular have to think carefully about whether they have enough start-up capital to certify their products with this important certificate. Certification costs companies between EUR 1,300 and EUR 3,000 per year, depending on the size, type of products and the variety of the product range. In addition, there are EUR 150 in annual license fees. These entitle the certified companies to use the GOTS logo for their products and to advertise with it.

If you are not sure whether a company is really GOTS-certified or think that the standard is not being met, you can easily check the public database. All those that carry the GOTS seal are listed there. This makes it quick and easy to catch black sheep, because the seal organizations stand for absolute transparency.

For us at Cosy Roots, GOTS is not just a label. It is a lived ideology. As a manufacturer of baby fashion, we only want the best organically produced natural fibers for delicate children's skin. Compliance with all social criteria is a matter of course for us and we have been working with our studio in Turkey for many years. The high quality of the organic cotton we use is what sets us apart. Fashion that is timeless and accompanies several generations of parents and children.
